As you know, we now look forward to the future of Radcliffe Riverside School with a new building planned for 2007. Whilst it's important to look to the future, we should always remember the past as without a past, there is no future! The inspiration for this project came from one of our students, Matthew Stewart who had originally created his own website detailing the history of Radcliffe and the surrounding area - so thanks Matthew for a great idea!

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
Hi - my name is Matthew Stewart. I'm a student at Radcliffe Riverside School and I have an interest in local history. My presentation below contains old photographs of Radcliffe High School and Coney Green Technology College. Both of these schools came together in 2004 to form what is now called 'Radcliffe Riverside School'. Thanks for taking the time to look ... - enjoy!

Ex Coney Green Head Master - Mr. William Dockerall

Mr. William Dockerall - Ex RRS Head

The photograph on the left shows ex Coney Green Head Master Mr. William Dockerall standing in front Coney Green School when it was just being built. At this stage, the back half of the school (where the science, cooking and CDT rooms are now) was not complete.

From what I've been told, the second half as it was planned, was never completed! This photo was taken on 12th June 1975. You can click on the photograph to view a bigger version.

Coney Green School - back

Coney Green School (back)

This photograph was taken on the 20th of January 1977. The photo is of the back of the school where the sports hall is now.

The name of the school when it was built, was Coney Green Country Comprehensive.

Coney Green Exterior - front and side

Coney Green Exterior front and side

This picture was also taken in the 1970s when the school was being built.

The rooms on the front photo show what is now the staff room, office and maths. I think the side image is the canteen.

The school only needed 12 teachers on it's first year of opening!

I don't really know very much about this picture but it's worth putting it in.

It's a very old picture of what was then called Radcliffe Secondary (Modern) School.

Coney Green School Fire

Coney Green School Fire

This photo was taken from a newspaper article covering the fire at Coney Green. The fire began in a class room next to the canteen (I believe it was Mrs Preston's old room wich is now part of the canteen).

Firemen were facing the fire when a metal support buckled and gave way, causing the roof in one of the classrooms to cave in.

The fire began at 8pm on a Sunday destroying three classrooms and the canteen in one wing of the school and 15 other cabins.

The corridors were smoke damaged and the school used temporary cabins and classrooms at the back of the school
