The 'Aspirin Challenge'
The Radcliffe Riverside University Tour continued as Mr Rothwell took his 10 A1 Science group to MMU for the Aspirin Challenge. The students were given the difficult challenge of following a complex set of scientific instructions by making their own aspirin tablets. Mr Rothwell could not say enough about how well behaved and industrious our students were; and likewise he could not hide his pride that his class were the only group that had managed to get every student to make Aspirin. Very impressive indeed when you consider how many Manchester and Bury schools had a go at the challenge, but all were left in the wake of 10A1!!!
YPATHE Mentoring Programme
Sam Allington and Mark O’Brien in year 11 have volunteered to take part in the YPATHE mentoring programme that is run in conjunction with Salford University. This scheme is designed to give students the benefits of experience based advice, revision and organisation tips and general academic guidance. On 8th December the lads visited the University for their induction and reported back that the course had got off to a great start. The students will make further visits to the University as well as taking apart in some online mentoring.
The Maths Squad
Accompanied by the Maths Subject Leader, Mr Wilikinson, some of our year 9 students
also sampled University life when they visited Manchester Metropolitan University
as part of the year 9 Maths Squad. This was the first of three activity afternoons
aimed at improving the students Maths Skills and our students did themselves
justice by mixing well with students from other schools and by winning some
of the activities. The next session is this month and I am sure the extra challenge
will help with the Maths SATs exams in May
Aim Higher Focus Group
When asked for two gifted and talented students to take part in a focus group for Aim Higher we looked no further than Ben Hardman and Oliver McDaid. These lads travelled into Manchester to visit the Galaxy FM studios as part of a group put together to collect young people’s opinions. There was also an opportunity to see around the Galaxy studios and to learn about how a radio station operates.
